The West End Square 50 project consisted of the demolishing of an aged firehouse and the construction of a nine-story building with one level of below-grade parking. The building features a new fire station for the Washington, D.C. Fire Department and a 20,000 square-foot squash facility with eight regulation-size courts, a bar and restaurant. The upper six floors of the building contains 61 affordable housing units. The firehouse and squash facility façade is comprised of metal panels and curtain wall, while the residential levels will be clad in fiber-cement panels with punched and soundproof windows.

Fort Myer Construction provided replacement of site utilities, new hardscape improvements, and roadway asphalt upgrades. This included trench excavation, installation of new water main, fire and domestic services, fire hydrants, sanitary laterals, and storm sewer main and laterals. The hardscape improvements included new granite curbs, brick and PCC gutter, ADA handicap ramps, alley repairs, new driveway entrances, PCC sidewalks, benches, and bike racks. The asphalt improvements included utility base cuts with mill and overlay of 23rd and M Street.

Project Significance

This project is the result of two decades of effort to help revitalize Washington, DC’s West End neighborhood by offering affordable housing, activities, and a nightlife that all can enjoy. This project has also won several awards for design and innovation from Associated Builders and Contractors, NAIOP Commercial Real Estate Development Association, and Engineering News-Record MidAtlantic Region.
