In 2014, Prince George’s County was faced with an enormous regulatory challenge in the management of its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System and its Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit that needed an innovative solution. The Urban Stormwater Retrofit project was comprised of several ponds throughout the Maryland area that received professional services in planning and designing new green infrastructure to improve the water quality in underdeveloped areas.

Fort Myer Construction’s responsibilities as a general contractor on this project were to assist in the Clean Water Partnership by collaborating with county-based small businesses and county-based minority businesses and providing subcontracting opportunities and constructional guidance of projects. Fort Myer was responsible for oversight of 8 stormwater retrofit sites. Retrofits include reconfiguring and regrading ponds so they provide a permanent pool of water. Water flows in to a forebay that captures and settles out pollutants such as sediment and nutrients.

Project Significance

This project allowed Fort Myer Construction to participate with Prince George’s County and the community in helping to solve the stormwater regulatory challenges and by proving supportive services as a mentor to subcontractors in the CWP Mentor Protégé Program.
