PHASE 1/PILOT BLOCK-DCNET FIBER – STREETLIGHTS
DCNET was engaged in a Smart City Initiative with DDOT’s Street Light Asset Management team. DCNET, along with partners such as National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) and Golden Triangle Business Improvement District (GT BID) in developing applications within a jointly selected pilot block on Pennsylvania Ave NW. DCNET extended its fiber infrastructure to the District’s Street Light infrastructure enabling Wireless and Remote Lighting Management Applications. Phase 1 of the pilot block consisted of approximately 80 street lights that were converted to a LED lighting system along with remote monitoring capabilities. Additionally, there were 30 Wireless Access Points (WAPs) approximately that were placed strategically to provide necessary wireless coverage within the pilot area, about 76 motion Sensor Pods and 23 Video Nodes for showing vacant parking spaces.
Fort Myer was responsible for the removal and replacement of existing luminaires with LED, installing monitoring nodes and wireless access points.
Project Significance
Fort Myer was recommended to work on this project by the DDOT Street Lighting Engineer for the project to assist in the developmental stages of the project. This recommendation proved that our Electrical Department is recognized as being knowledgeable and their expertise is highly respected.
