LEE HWY/US ROUTE 29 WIDENING – PH 3
The Project constructed an additional travel lane northbound on Lee Highway, US Route 29, between the intersection of Legato Road and Shirley Gate Road. Along the southbound lanes of Lee Highway, the project limits extend from just north of Waples Mill Road to Stevenson Road. The site is approximately 8,650 feet long and included 5 signalized intersections. The project provided a third travel lane and sidewalk for the length of the improvements.
Fort Myer was responsible for the demolition of asphalt and concrete, clearing, excavation, erosion and sediment controls, asphalt, concrete sidewalk, concrete curb and gutter, asphalt trail, under-drain, construction survey and stakeout, striping and signage, maintenance of traffic, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, box culvert extension, signal conduit, waterline (pipe sizes 6″- 30″), traffic signals, and bio-filtration storm water basins.
The waterline installed was Ductile Iron Pipe (DIP) and included 709 LF of 30”; 1,485 LF of 16”; 57 LF of 12”, 424 LF of 8”, and 116 LF of 6” DIP.
Project Significance
A portion of the project site was identified as potentially having soils containing naturally occurring asbestos. If encountered, asbestos monitoring, testing, and abatement will be required. This project also required significant amounts of night and weekend work since the project was in a heavy traffic area.
