Now boasting a vibrant new playground and splash park, the ground beneath Kennedy Recreation Center has an extensive and storied history dating back the 1800s. Through the years it has been the site of a Civil War Barracks, an outdoor market, an elementary school, and a health clinic. In 1964, then Attorney General, Robert Kennedy dedicated a playground in the name of John F Kennedy.
Now a colorful space filled with gadgets sparking any child’s imagination, the playground is separated into 2 areas for younger and older children. Fort Myer’s design-build work on this aviation-themed project included dismantling and removing existing play equipment, then installing underground foundations for the new equipment and poured in place (PIP) safety rubber surfaces. Also installed were the new play structures, fences, horseshoe pits, water fountains, a splash park, a large shade pavilion, adult exercise equipment, custom signage and landscaping.
Existing tennis and basketball courts were resurfaced and now have new fencing and lighting. An artistic concrete circle offers the historical images and timeframe of the neighborhood.

 

Project Significance

Though there were unanticipated obstacles uncovered during the initial installation of underground foundations, the team was still able to deliver one of the best parks in DC. Major playground structures were installed and water features are a large part of this park’s attraction. An asset to this park is the diversity of activities surrounded by beautiful landscaping.
