ANACOSTIA LINE STREETCAR TRACK, ROADWAY RECONSTRUCTION, & FACILITY CONSTRUCTION

ANACOSTIA LINE STREETCAR TRACK, ROADWAY RECONSTRUCTION, & FACILITY CONSTRUCTION

The DC Streetcar is a surface light rail and streetcar network project organized by the District Department of Transportation. Fort Myer was hired to revitalize South Capitol Street. & Firth Sterling Avenue SE and lay track in Anacostia in an effort to revitalize blighted commercial corridors. Included in our work on the project was: relocation of existing utilities, installation of new utility infrastructure, new streetcar track work, overhead streetcar catenary system, traffic signals, street lights, traction power substation work, construction of curb, gutter, sidewalk and asphalt roadway, as well as construction of an operations and maintenance facility located on South Capitol Street.

Project Significance

The streetcars will be the first to run in DC since the dismantling of the previous streetcar system in 1962. Fort Myer was able to help DDOT meet their objectives to provide a quality service to attract and reach new ridership, link neighborhoods, reduce traffic and air pollution, and encourage economic development. Due to design revisions this project was put on hold by the city. Even with the forced delays, Fort Myer was able to complete our portion of this significant and highly visible work quickly and on budget. This initial line segment took delivery of the first streetcar in May 2014 to begin testing and commissioning.
