BRYANT STREET PUMPING STATION

BRYANT STREET PUMPING STATION

The Bryant Street Pumping Station (BSPS) is the heart of the District’s water distribution system. The pumping station receives drinking water from reservoirs and pumps it to all areas of the city. This project was a key component of the DC Water Capital Improvement Program to replace vital water infrastructure throughout the area. The pipes replaced were constructed in the early 1900s and were large transmission mains that extended outside the BSPS building along Bryant Street, NW, between 2nd and 4th Streets, 2nd Street between Bryant and W Street and Adams Street, NW. Fort Myer removed and replaced the high and low pressure water mains including pipe sizes ranging from 20″ to 48″ in diameter that are feeding and delivering to the BSPS. In addition, the renovation project included the removal and replacement of check valves, butterfly valves, and many related instruments within the system. The work also included restoration of Bryant Street, NW from 2nd to 4th Streets and 2nd Street from Bryant Street to south of W Street, which included new granite curb, concrete gutter, concrete sidewalk, and asphalt pavement.

Project Significance

This discharge piping replacement contract showcased Fort Myer’s ability to work closely with the client and local community to mitigate traffic impact during an invasive open trench operation. The pumping station was immediately bordered by a residential area (Bryant, 2nd and Adams Streets, NW), a District Department of Public Works facility and Howard University. Fort Myer worked closely with all project stakeholders to ensure that the disruption from the project was mitigated while coordinating with other ongoing construction work at Howard University.
