I-66 MULTIMODAL IMPROVEMENTS
This project was one of the first improvements for I-66 Inside the Beltway in the last 20 years. Previously, I-66 Inside the Beltway was only restricted to carpool vehicles with authorized clean special fuel license plates, Dulles airport travelers, and law enforcement. With the new I-66 Inside the Beltway program, all drivers are able to use the interstate during peak hours, in exchange for paying a toll.
Fort Myer was responsible for constructing and installing eight new electronic toll/registration gantries, shelters and high-tech sensors and electronic message signs necessary to convert an approximate 10-mile section of I-66 to dynamically-priced high-occupancy toll lanes. Additionally, our team handled shoulder reconstruction and drainage improvements around gantry locations.
Project Significance
FMCC successfully met all milestones and completed the project 4 months ahead of schedule. The team performed an impressive $34M of work in 12 months, wrapping up the bulk of the work by August 2017. The client requested additional work and extended the contract.
The Association of Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Metro Washington recognized this project with a 2018 Excellence in Construction Award in Infrastructure.
