ROUTE 1 WIDENING IN PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY
This contract involves widening Route 1 from a four to a six lane divided highway between Marys Way and Annapolis Way and new bridge construction. The project includes:
- Enhanced access to the Woodbridge VRE kiss-and-ride facility
- A new Route 1 bridge at Marumsco Creek
- Improvements to Occoquan Road, including a median and turn lanes
- Additional through and turn lanes on Route 1 and Occoquan Road to improve traffic operations
- A ten-foot shared-use path and six-foot sidewalk
- Demolition of several vacant buildings along the corridor
- Work also involves the relocation of water and sewer facilities, new sidewalks, retaining walls, and traffic signalization. Demolition operations at the northern end of the project occurred in Summer and Fall 2016. Installation of waterline, sewer and drainage facilities is ongoing with work on the Marumsco Creek bridge expected to begin in mid-September 2016.
Project Significance
This project requires significant night work. Route 1 currently carries 35,000 vehicles per day. Projected volumes for 2036 are 75,000 vehicles per day. Easing traffic congestion on Route 1 could help drivers on I-95, when I-95 gets backed-up and drivers then head to Route 1. “This is going to have a huge positive impact on commuters who use this corridor, not just along Rt. 1, but those who use 95, as well, because now we’ll have a better escape route for those days when 95 gets too backed up,” says Marty Nohe, chairman of the NOVA Transportation Authority.
