FORT STEVENS PLAYGROUND
The design-build project at Fort Stevens includes two outdoor playgrounds, an exercise area, and various water features like a mister feature, water fountains, and a rain garden.
The design for Fort Stevens was inspired by the nearby Civil War fort site with a new play space built around an artificial mound resembling the ramparts of the fort. The low mound provides a separation between play equipment for different age groups as well as space for unstructured play. Behind the recreation center, new raised garden beds, fitness equipment, and shade expanded the opportunities at Fort Stevens.
Fort Myer Construction was hired to help modernize the space and began by dismantling and removing the existing equipment. Once underground foundations and PIP safety surfaces were installed. An updated area behind the building allows adults to be active on the new exercise equipment we installed. Fencing, benches, tables, custom signage and landscaping were also part of our contribution to this project.
Project Significance
An existing water line tie-in originally created problems. Fort Myer is well-versed in finding solutions and once the water was disconnected, our team successfully researched to find alternative water source solution. This park was completed in an extremely tight timeframe. The finished product is an asset to the neighborhood.
