Reconstruction of GW Parkway Bridge
This bridge on the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) in Alexandria was rehabilitated and reconstructed over the Reagan National Airport entrance ramp. This project required the meticulous removal of existing historic stonework on the retaining walls and abutments, full reconstruction of the bridge abutments and wing walls including drilled shafts for the foundation, and structural steel placement with a new concrete deck. Other major work included the full depth reconstruction and resurfacing of the ramp under the GWMP bridge and reconstruction of the original stonework upon completion.
Project Significance
Showcases Fort Myer Construction’s ability to reconstruct historic bridges authentically in a timely and efficient manner. The stonework on the existing retaining walls were numbered as they were carefully removed to ensure that the new bridge would not only provide a greater convenience to the thousands commuting to the airport, but also restore the original historic appearance of this GWMP bridge.
