CRYSTAL CITY AND POTOMAC YARD BUS TRANSITWAY AND BUS STOPS
Arlington County and the City of Alexandria built the Washington metropolitan area’s first right-of-way dedicated to premium surface transit. The new 4.5-mile Transitway between the Crystal City and Braddock Road Metrorail stations provides faster and more reliable bus service along the congested Route 1 corridor. Arlington’s Transitway section included a new all-day dedicated transit lane in Potomac Yard, a peak period transit lane in Crystal City and seven new transit stations. Fort Myer’s scope of work included construction of a bus transitway and new high quality bus stops. Old Bus shelters were detached, salvaged, and removed from the site. Sitework included demolition, exterior improvements, site utilities, and construction of new bus pads and walkways. After milling and demo were complete, base and tack coats were added, followed by construction of curb and gutter and sidewalk. Pavers and detectable warning devices were installed. All street light conduits and electrical ductbanks were sealed with concrete before installing new foundation and back filling. Site utility work included all storm drain and sanitary sewer work, connections to existing utilities, and adjusting utility access structures to new pavement/sidewalk elevations. The site now features ADA compliant wheelchair ramps and walkways.
Project Significance
The Transitway supports development underway in these neighborhoods, as well as planned growth. Separating bus service from traffic will result in corridor-wide travel time savings of 1-1/4 to 10 minutes for riders. Due to the increase in population, traffic control was an important element throughout this safely performed project.
