RIVERSMART WASHINGTON GREEN ALLEY – CHEVY CHASE
FMCC’s focus for this project was to construct Low Impact Development Facilities in Various NW DC locations. The Green Alleys Chevy Chase project reconstructed the alleys between Rittenhouse St., Broad Branch Rd., 34th Place, 33rd Street and Quesada St. The entire alley was constructed using full width pervious concrete, center strip of pervious concrete, and standard concrete. This project reduced the quantity of storm water runoff and improved the water quality prior to it entering the District’s storm sewer system.
Work included:
• Bioretention areas, or rain gardens in tree box areas
• Permeable paving in alleys, roads, and parking lanes
• Curb bump-outs Material included in the project is pervious concrete,permeable pavers, and porous asphalt.
Project Significance
The District’s Green Alley Projects were designed to reduce the quantity and improve the quality of storm water within the city’s right-of-way (ROW). Although alleys constitute a significant portion of impervious surface, most do not have storm water controls, such as water quality catch basins or grate inlets. To mitigate this, Green Alleys used a sustainable design and Low Impact Development (LID) techniques that reduced the amount of storm water and pollutants entering the sewer system by increasing water infiltration and treatment on site.
