The project involved the rehabilitation of Constitution Avenue, NW from 18th Street to 23rd Street located within the federal enclave of America’s Capital in Washington, DC. Construction included replacement of pavement, curbs, gutters, sidewalks and lighting. Each of the 12 blocks of 8-lane thoroughfare was rehabilitated block by block. The old concrete-based roadway was removed, replaced and covered with new asphalt. The sidewalks were finished with exposed aggregate concrete; new concrete curbs, gutters, crosswalks, and roadway bus pads were built. New storm water drainage was installed; dying trees were removed and replaced with new landscaping; new striping was applied to the roadway; and the traffic signalization and street lighting was upgraded with new wiring, fixtures, and lamps.

 

Project Significance

This ARRA (Stimulus) project is the largest structural overhaul in 60-80 years of the primary roadway and infrastructure leading to America’s most cherished monuments. This project demonstrates Fort Myer’s ability to perform multiple construction activities against a daily stream of traffic on a major roadway traveled by hundreds of thousands of vehicles to and from federal and private workplaces and tourist attractions. Even with the challenges of steady traffic, numerous unplanned construction interruptions, etc., Fort Myer Construction Corporation completed the job within budget and ahead of schedule.
