CITY MARKET AT “O” STREET
The City Market at O Street project combined the charm of the 19th Century with the sophistication of 21st Century by creating a flagship, state-of-the-art Giant Food store, 650 residential units, a 182-room Cambria Suites hotel, additional retail, and over 500 parking spaces. The City Market at O Street served as the catalyst for the revitalization of the Shaw community, one of Washington’s oldest commercial, residential, and cultural districts.
Fort Myer Construction’s responsibilities included to complete the lighting system by first removing existing traffic signal poles, fixtures, and foundations. Which was followed by the installation of pole foundations, PVC conduits and trenching, light feeders, and circuitry cables associated with 26 new light poles and manholes.
Project Significance
Due to a late discovery of the new building being built to the wrong grade (the first floor was about 8-10 inches too low on the O Street side of the property), the project did not meet ADA requirements. The client requested that Fort Myer correct this error by excavating the roadway, placing GAB as the sub-base to the roadway, and to pave the street all within a 20 day period to allow the Giant Food store to be opened on time. Since this work was not in the original scope, a contract modification was developed and quickly executed to achieve the time-sensitive deadline. Fort Myer takes pride in being able to quickly and safely assist our clients in a pinch.
