WAXPOOL ROAD EXPANSION
The Waxpool Road Expansion project widened the Waxpool Road/Faulkner Parkway intersection (Route 640/Route 2119) to Unbridled Way from two (2) lanes to four (4) lanes and install a traffic signal at the intersection of Waxpool Road and Ashburn Village Boulevard. The total length of this project was approximately 3,400 feet.
Commuters head to and from the Dulles Greenway pass through this intersection daily. These improvements drastically shorten wait times at the four-way stop and eliminate the traffic back-up that occurs during rush hour.
Fort Myer Construction’s responsibilities included utility relocations, pavement widening, curb and gutter, storm sewer, traffic signal installation, signage & striping, maintenance of traffic, and installation of the intersection traffic signals.
Project Significance
Construction of the Waxpool Road Expansion project began in 2013 and encountered significant overall project delays due to the discovery of unforeseen underground utilities. Also, during the time between plan approval and construction, additional utilities were installed as this area has a substantial amount of telecommunications infrastructure. A year-long utility investigation process ensued and the multiple utilities involved were coordinated.
