CHELTENHAM YOUTH DETENTION CENTER
The latest addition to the Cheltenham Youth Facility in Prince George’s County, Maryland was led by Turner Construction and required they demolish a number of outdated buildings on the site before beginning construction on a 100,000 square foot, 72-bed detention facility to house male juvenile offenders in need of secure services. Fort Myer was retained as a subcontractor for Turner Construction to oversee site work and outdoor recreational space. The project which included installation of several bio-retention ponds, excavation of parking lots, track and sidewalks, asphalt and porous paving, porous asphalt at rubberized running track and outdoor basketball court. We were also responsible for HMA Superpave at 3 basketball courts, grass pave fire truck access lanes, pavement markings and striping, concrete footings for site furniture including flag poles, bike rack loops, and athletic posts.
Project Significance
This project demonstrates Fort Myer Construction’s ability to successfully incorporate underdrains and observation wells built with bio-retention ponds and outdoor recreational features. Our team installed porous asphalt and trench drains that tie into rain gardens to control water which align with the area’s rising trend of being environmentally conscious. These landscaping components are a responsible way to filter sediments as well as manage the hydrostatic flow of the on-site storm water run-off. The retention pond provides a positive environment for vegetation, a sanctuary for other wildlife, and then allows excess water to infiltrate native soils or is directed to nearby storm water drains.
