ANACOSTIA FREEWAY BRIDGES RECONSTRUCTION
The project consisted of the rehabilitation of the northbound and southbound lanes of the Anacostia Freeway over Malcolm X Avenue, SE and the southbound ramp onto South Capitol Street. Major work included rehabilitating abutments, removing and replacing structural steel for all single span bridges, and placing a new concrete deck on the ramp and bridge over Malcolm X Avenue. The cast-in-place retaining wall for the ramp was also rehabilitated and restored to its original condition by removing and replacing the original stonework. Also, the rehabilitation of existing pavement and electrical construction installing street lighting and traffic signals was completed.
Project Significance
This project demonstrates Fort Myer Construction’s ability to undertake complex bridge construction in heavy traffic conditions under an extremely aggressive and fast-paced schedule. With substantial construction required for all three bridges in just 130 calendar days, the project was reduced from two phases to one by our expertise in planning, mobilization and ability to reduce construction delays to the traveling public.
