WASHINGTON BOULEVARD BIKE TRAIL IMPROVEMENTS
Washington Boulevard Bike Trail Improvements project constructed a bike and pedestrian trial along Washington Boulevard that provides a connection from Arlington Boulevard to Columbia Pike and a new access way into Towers Park. Our contract included construction of a 10’ wide pedestrian bridge the trail along the west side of Washington Boulevard. The trail is primarily located within the highway right-of-way, but also passes through the property of the US Navy Supply Facility, Arlington County’s Towers Park, and provides access to several public streets.
Fort Myer was responsible for constructing a pedestrian bridge, clearing and grubbing, excavation, storm drainage, milling, asphalt and concrete paving, steel guardrail installation, landscaping, pavement markings and providing a soldier pile retaining wall with drilled shaft foundations reinforced with H-piles.
Project Significance
An environmental assessment determined the original project design would impact the environment by eliminating 185 trees. Due to this, the design had to be modified to remove 84 trees and to replant 160 trees in the area. Staff also decided to relocate much of the northern section of the new trail onto the shoulder of Washington Boulevard to reduce the need to construct retaining walls and to minimize impacts to adjacent trees and landscaped area.
