THEODORE ROOSEVELT BRIDGE MOVEABLE BARRIER
Since 1997, DDOT has been operating with Quickchange Moveable Barrier (QMB) technology on the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge. The Moveable Barrier System (MBS) consists of a Barrier Transfer Machine (BTM) and approximately 4,500 feet of portable concrete barriers. The system is designed to increase the vehicular capacity of either side of the Theodore Bridge by creating additional lanes for traffic during rush hour periods. It is also designed to provide barriers between two-way traffic. This is one of many moveable barrier sites throughout the Northeast Corridor.
Fort Myer has been overseeing this contract since 2008 and is responsible for operating and providing preventive and corrective maintenance to the Moveable Barrier System (MBS) located on the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge in order to relieve traffic congestion during rush hour periods and at the request of DDOT during non-rush hour periods.
Project Significance
As part of the District of Columbia’s Operations Branch, the transition of lanes along the bridge is accomplished through the use of a barrier movement vehicle to minimize vehicular congestion. This is one of a number of contracts to facilitate commuter movement in DC.
