A bridge and roadway reconstruction and widening project on the Anacostia Freeway (I-295) located in southeast Washington, DC. Two single-span bridges over Laboratory Road and one three-span bridge over Oxen Run Bay were reconstructed. This two-phase project required constructing steel sheet pile cofferdams to facilitate pier rehabilitation, driving steel H-piles for pier widening, and performing concrete and crack repairs to the existing piers for the bridge over Oxen Run Bay. Other major work included the erection of new structural steel on the rehabilitated abutments and piers, full concrete superstructure reconstruction for all bridges, over 1500 linear feet of cast-in-place concrete retaining walls with architectural stone liner finish, and full depth widening and resurfacing of nearly two miles of the Anacostia Freeway.

 

Project Significance

This project showcases Fort Myer Construction’s ability to complete complex bridge and road reconstruction with safety and efficiency while working over water. Innovative roadway elements were utilized in this project, including overhead variable message signs and weigh-in-motion stations.
