The Oxon Run Trail Rehabilitation consists of the rehabilitation of existing trails and construction of new trails within Oxon Run Park, from South Capitol Street SE to 13th Street SE. This project improved bicycle and pedestrian transportation and recreational park access, while extending trail networks. Work included removal of existing trails, construction of aggregate base and asphalt pavement base and surface course for new and replacement of trails, installation of pipe culverts, replacement and construction of new sidewalks, removal and replacement of curb and gutter, sign installation and pavement. Also incorporated into this project is Low Impact Development (LID) work, lighting, and traffic signals.

Fort Myer was a subcontractor to Capitol Paving on this project and responsibilities included the installation of new porous mix asphalt and hot mix asphalt.

 

Project Significance

The purpose of the new trail was to connect a number of communities and neighborhoods by improving the gaps in the existing trail system. Given the population densities of surrounding neighborhoods and the lack of trails and greenways in southeastern DC, this trail will be used by a wide range of people and for a variety of trip purposes.

Many trips include commuting to and from work and school, shopping, attending events, and gaining access to entertainment venues. Intermodal trips will be generated by the trail’s access to the Southern Avenue metro station and many metro bus routes/ stops. Other benefits of the trail include greater network connectivity to the National Harbor and the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.
