I-81 BRIDGE DECK OVERLAY
The I-81 Bridge Deck Overlay project rehabilitated 6 bridge structures on I-81 in Roanoke County, VA. Maintaining the existing transportation infrastructure is a major concern for VDOT. With increased travel costs, safety concerns, and financial burdens involved in replacing deteriorating decks, VDOT is taking appropriate rehabilitation actions, like this, to safely extend the service life of structures, instead of replacing the bridges entirely.
Fort Myer Construction’s responsibilities included surface preparation, furnishing and placing latex hydraulic cement concrete and bridge deck grooving. Preparation and placement of elastomeric joint sealer; concrete surface color coating on surface area of all railings, deck edges, deck overhangs along with concrete superstructure and substructure surface repairs.
Project Significance
This project is an example of VDOT’s Bridge Preservation Program. This program’s goal is to provide restorative and preventive maintenance to all bridges. This program also aims to ensure all bridge construction and maintenance is cost-effective and sustains the life of all structures.
