MACARTHUR BLVD BIKEWAY IMPROVEMENTS

MACARTHUR BLVD BIKEWAY IMPROVEMENTS

This project widened the existing road by four feet to provide three-foot bike lanes in each direction as well as additional bikeway improvements along 13,800 LF of MacArthur Blvd from I-495 to Oberlin Ave. Also created, was a five-foot minimum vegetative buffer between the road and the path. Fort Myer’s team was hired to widen the road, repave the bike line, install a bio retention pond and restore two streams. Also, professionally installed was striping for the travel lanes, crosswalk, and road shoulder as well as proper signage to direct path users, cyclists, and motor vehicles. Outdated signage was removed and new vegetation was planted, while implementing tree preservation techniques.

Project Significance

In an area notorious for safety concerns among multi-modal travelers, this project demonstrates Fort Myer Construction’s ability to enhance safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. The project enhances connectivity with other bikeways in the vicinity and encourages alternate modes of travel. There was public concern about construction in the area lasting a year, but FMCC’s project leaders and crew were applauded by local residents for their professionalism and care.

Electrical Work

The electrical department’s portion of this work included installing 200 amp service (120/240V electrical panel) to power new lighting under the I-495 overpass (2 four-lane highways). In addition to the mounting the electrical cabinet to new foundation, the service disconnect and meter can were connected and lights were installed, attached directly to bridge.
