LONG BRIDGE PARK
Long Bridge Park is a new park located at 475 Old Jefferson Davis Highway. Building a park at the site transformed what was once a light industrial area into a distinctive showplace of environmentally sound redevelopment, featuring a central expanse of attractive public green spaces, high-quality outdoor recreation facilities and environmentally responsible structures.
The overall project led by the Donohue Companies, included landscaping, picnic areas and a raised observation area with breathtaking views of the Potomac. A three-quarter acre rain garden infiltrates runoff from the park’s parking lot and sports fields into a planted garden of native shrubs and perennials.
Fort Myer was responsible for reconstructing about 2,750 feet of Old Jefferson Davis Highway and 6th Street South to complement the recreational facilities and amenities and provide gateway from the south into the Long Bridge Park area. Also included in Fort Myer’s involvement was a parking lot for park patrons.
Project Significance
Prior to Fort Myer’s commencement of work, major storm water flooding issues needed to be remedied and the county wanted existing overhead electrical conduits moved underground. That work added multiple postponements to Fort Myer’s ability to begin paving. After waiting 3 years for the completion of drainage and electrical work, Fort Myer achieved our portion of the project in a swift 8 months, working nights to complete the parking lot portion of the project done. The client was extremely satisfied with our timely performance.
