FORT LINCOLN NEW TOWN STORMWATER POND
Construction of a storm water management facility behind new development on Fort Lincoln Drive NE in Washington, DC included clearing and grubbing, sediment erosion control, 33,000 cubic yards of excavation, and installing new storm water management system. Additionally, Fort Myer’s team skillfully built a 1,700 linear foot dual level gravity stone wall. The wall was stabilized using up to 50 feet deep caissons. The project was finalized with tree plantings and landscaping.
Project Significance
This property was originally a dump site so there was material embedded in the ground that prevented drilling using a standard auger. Specialty equipment was brought in to successfully drill through waste concrete and rubble.
This project demonstrates Fort Myer Construction’s ability to creatively manage an unexpected situation with mass amounts of storm and underground water. Laborers experienced unsteady earth that would not maintain structure during drilling due to the drenched ground. The crew was challenged by having to develop a new system for installation of caissons and successfully overcame the issue by using steel and CMP casing to maintain structure and prevent earth from caving in.
Despite the unanticipated complexities, the storm water management pond was completed within budget.
