DESIGN-BUILD REHABILITATION OF I-66

DESIGN-BUILD REHABILITATION OF I-66

This design-build rehabilitation project involved full-depth patching of concrete pavement and asphalt overlay across all six lanes on a 6.5 mile section of a highly traveled roadway connecting the spawning northern Virginia communities, the Dulles access roadway, and the District of Columbia. Our team performed approximately 60K square yards of Type 1 and Type 2 concrete patching prior to asphalt overlay. Construction activities included associated roadway geometrics, modifications to the existing storm water drainage system and clearances for the existing infrastructure, new utility lighting, concrete barriers, and guardrails. Also installed was a traffic detection system – part of an automated traffic management system (ATM) employing electronic roadway signage, vehicle detection sensors, ramp metering, and closed circuit television cameras to monitor traffic. Volkert & Associates, Inc. served as the design consultant.

Project Significance

This American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) project exhibits Fort Myer’s ability to produce a quality product safely, within the projected budget, and ahead of schedule while performing night-time construction to minimize traffic disruptions to one of the busiest high-speed transportation corridors in the Metropolitan Washington, DC region. Completion of the project provided increased vehicular safety, and reduced congestion and fuel consumption. Additionally, the project required coordination of multiple traffic patterns at the point where the current I-495 “Hot Lanes” construction was underway.

Award-Winner

This project earned a 2012 Quality in Construction Award for Excellence in construction in asphalt pavement. The Quality in Construction Award recognizes paving jobs completed in line with best practices and standards known to yield high-quality asphalt pavements.
