CONNECTICUT AVE STREETSCAPE – PHASE 3
The scope of work included new street lighting, traffic signals, curb, gutter, paver sidewalk, site furnishings, landscaping and asphalt roadway paving & striping of Connecticut Ave. from L St. NW to Dupont Circle. This area is in the Golden Triangle neighborhood of DC which is primarily occupied by offices, retail shops, hotels, bars and restaurants.
DDOT and the Golden Triangle BID redesigned and revitalized Connecticut Avenue through successful partnerships with FMCC, Volkert and others. The pocket park is one the first steps taken in the effort to implement green technology and position DC as a global incubator for creativity and innovation.
From the construction of an artfully landscaped median to beautiful new sidewalk pavers and additional street furniture, Connecticut Avenue has been transformed into a grand avenue connecting Dupont Circle to K Street.
A client-initiated change order made this the first totally LED street lighting project in the Downtown Business District in Washington, DC. Our electrical division installed 22 LED Tear Drop Fixtures on the corners and 65 up-right LED fixtures between the corners, (L Street NW to Dupont Circle). The job included 3 signalized intersections including:
- 18th Street – M Street, Rhode Island Ave and Connecticut Ave, NW
- 18th Street – Connecticut Ave and Jefferson Place, NW
- 18th Street – N Street and Connecticut Ave, NW
Project Significance
Both vehicular and pedestrian traffic is extremely heavy in this area and requires stringent attention to keeping the public separated and well protected from ever-shifting work zones while always maintaining access to every building. Tremendous community outreach is required to keep everyone happy and safe. In addition to advancing the city’s sustainability efforts by installing LED street lights. Fort Myer was able to install the first U.S. outdoor application of a kinetic paver field that will utilize power generated from pedestrian foot traffic to power lighting to park benches.
