MD 410 (EAST WEST HWY) SAFETY & RESURFACING IMPROVEMENTS

MD 410 (EAST WEST HWY) SAFETY & RESURFACING IMPROVEMENTS

Work to restore MD 410 (East West Highway) from Carry Lane to Fenton Street in Montgomery County wrapped up ahead of schedule in October 2015. This project involved full depth patching, micro milling, resurfacing, upgrading curb and gutter, ADA ramps, sidewalks, medians, and driveways.  Handicap ramps include detectable warning surfaces which were constructed to meet current ADA standards. In addition, traffic signal improvements including overhead traffic signs, IP-Based video detection cameras, Audible/Tactile Pedestrian Pushbutton Stations (APS) were installed. Finally, our team improved the roadway drainage system spanning the entire project and restriped the roadways.

Project Significance

The Gap-Graded asphalt mix 12.5 MM is typically used for surfacing the Heavy Load Highway Traffic, not in an urban setting. Since SHA found themselves needing to resurface this road every few years, they decided to use a sturdier, higher quality material such as gap-graded asphalt to maximize rutting resistance and durability.  Asphalt mix and compaction incentives were achieved due to the smoothness and density of the final product, which result in top-notch pavement performance.

Project Praise

Otto “Vince” Rethemeyer, SHA Area Engineer, commended our team saying: “SHA would like to pass along our appreciation for your professionalism and enthusiasm during the paving operations for this project. While SHA did not expect any problems, what problems did occur were efficiently and professionally handled by your staff. The schedule was kept to the letter, and the budget was maintained for the main portions of the work. In closing, SHA would like to give special thanks to Fort Myer’s Superintendent for his due diligence, enthusiasm and open communication between SHA’s Project Engineer which was instrumental in the overall project’s success.”
