I-295/MALCOLM X AVENUE INTERCHANGE IMPROVEMENTS
I-295 Malcolm X Avenue Interchange Improvements project is designed to provide commuters easy access to the Saint Elizabeth’s campus from both sides of I-295. The improvements will be made between Firth Sterling Avenue SE, to the north, and the South Capitol Street/Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue SE intersection to the south. The project will provide transportation improvements to serve the proposed Department of Homeland Security headquarters consolidation on the St. Elizabeth’s West Campus.
Fort Myer will be responsible for all roadway improvements, constructing six bridges, the widening of an existing bridge and the installation of lighting and stormwater drainage systems.
Project Significance
This project is a part of the District’s commitment to a multi-million dollar investment deal in transportation along the Anacostia River. With the Department of Homeland Security Headquarters moving to the Old Elizabeth’s Hospital campus, these improvements will allow traffic to circulate seamlessly to and from the new federal complex and the front gate of the air force base to the west of the highway.
This project also facilitated a formalized process for Fort Myer to offer job opportunities and career training for DC residents in the construction industry through the District’s Trainee and Workforce Development Program.
