This section of Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) was severely congested in both directions during the morning and evening rush. Widening and upgrading intersections helped relieve congestion and improve air quality, road operation, and safety. In 2011, Route 7 carried 60,000 vehicles per day in this area and by 2034, is expected to carry 87,000 vehicles per day. The project widens Route 7 from four to six lanes with a raised median and included:

• A 10-foot-wide shared-use path in both directions
• Lengthened turn lanes
• A new traffic signal at the intersection of Redberry Court and the relocated Woody’s Golf Course entrance
• Improved intersection operation, particularly at Georgetown Pike, Route 7 and Seneca Road
  Major utilities are located along this section of Route 7, including a 24-inch gas line, a 12-inch water line, fiber optic communications, telephone lines, and electrical lines. Utility relocation continued through fall 2013 while the project was under construction.

Project Significance

This was a very large construction project on one of Fairfax County’s major routes. Fort Myer Construction dealt with several restrictions including time limitations and massive traffic management.
