From Homeless to Hopeful and Hired: FMCC Employee Featured in Washington Post

From Homeless to Hopeful and Hired: FMCC Employee Featured in Washington Post

December 1, 2015 Julie Breedlove

A recent addition to the Fort Myer Construction team was featured in The Washington Post. Joseph Marshall’s journey hasn’t been easy and he has overcome many obstacles, but is climbing back on top thanks to the resources from Community of Hope, his determination, and the job he was able to secure at Fort Myer Construction.

Joseph was down on his luck and unexpectedly became homeless while he struggled to provide for his family. After over a year in a family shelter, he transferred to Community of Hope’s transitional apartments and worked with an employment specialist who helped him build a resume and suggested he apply at FMCC. Among several applicants, HR found him to be qualified and eager to work. With a stable, well-paying job again, Joseph and his family are preparing to move out of the shelter. He’s proud to finally give his children the safety and support he wasn’t afforded growing up. “It’s been a journey,” he says, “but it’s all going up from here.”

Read his story about how “a broken-down car sent a family spiraling into homelessness“.

Community of Hope is a nonprofit helping local families in need. This organization is among many that Fort Myer supports and actively performs outreach to when hiring. Joseph Marshall knows firsthand the value this organization can add.
